The scheme at Y Felin included the conversion and extension of a historic water powered mill into holiday accommodation; modernisation and extension of the existing farmhouse; re-building of a derelict stone cow shed to be used as an extension to the house; landscaping and road works.
Maintaining the historic significance of the existing structures and their context was of utmost importance, with a minimum intervention approach leading the design. Extensions to these buildings took contemporary, semi industrial forms, reflecting the original use of the site. The extensions touch very lightly on the existing buildings, with their forms seeking to ensure minimal visual impact from the road. Throughout the design process Catalina Architecture Ltd worked closely with Ceredigion County Council Planning Department, and were encouraged by their positive and supportive response to the contemporary nature of the design.
